Bruno Fernandes has been a catalyst-like figure since joining Manchester United in January of 2020.
The Portugal international really hit the ground in the Premier League and has recently earned plaudits from former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt (via the Mirror), who doesn’t think there are any better footballers in the world than Fernandes right now.
Already this season he has managed 21 goals and 12 assists in all competitions.
Comparisons to Eric Cantona a very much a thing, however, one of the Frenchman’s team-mates and former United captain, Steve Bruce, has said that in order to be considered in the same bracket as the United legend, Fernandes must win trophies and show up in big games.
“What you have to judge people on over a period of time is what they’ve won,” Bruce said ahead of Newcastle’s trip to Old Trafford, as per the Daily Mail. “Certainly, Eric for us, was the catalyst to go and win things.
“The way Fernandes has played in the last 12 months, it feels a bit like Eric because it’s his stage. Eric adored everything that went with playing for arguably the biggest and best club in the world.
“Fernandes has done fantastically well in doing that, it’s his stage. For it to be even suggest that he’s on the same hymn sheet as Eric is a wonderful compliment to him.
“Now they have to go and achieve and win things the way Eric did, and on big occasions win cup finals and semi-finals. If he does that then of course you can compare him to Eric.”
We can’t forget the fact Cantona had better players around him than Fernandes, but hopefully with some additions in the summer we’ll be in a better position to win the league next season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still needs to win his first trophy as United manager too, and the Reds have a real chance this year in the FA Cup and Europa League.
