Manchester United have reportedly been trying to tie midfield sensation Bruno Fernandes down on a new contract for the last three-months.

Fernandes, 26, joined United just over 12-months ago after making a £49.5m switch from Sporting Lisbon, as per Transfermarkt.

Since joining, the talented midfielder has had a profound effect on the Red Devils’ on-field performances which has prompted comparisons to legend Eric Cantona.

Fernandes boasts a remarkable record which includes 29 goals and 20 assists in his first 54 appearances, in all competitions.

Despite recently going five games without a goal, Fernandes was back among the goals during United’s 9-0 demotion job over Southampton earlier this week.

In light of the Portuguese superstar’s awe-inspiring form, The Athletic claim the Red Devils’ hierarchy opted to open contract talks back in November, despite the 26-year-old only being at Old Trafford for 11-months.

The Athletic claim the club are keen to tie Fernandes down on a new bumper deal even though his current deal runs until 2025 with an option to extend until 2026.

Fernandes’ entourage are hoping to agree terms with United officials which will see their Portuguese superstar’s contract better reflect his importance to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
