Rio Ferdinand stresses that he doesn’t want to ‘become a meme’ by making rash predictions about the title race — but admits he is getting excited about Manchester United’s chances.
We are all looking at the Premier League table eagerly anticipating Tuesday night’s clash away to Burnley. A win will send Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men three points clear of rivals Liverpool, who ended their 30-year wait to lift the league title last season.
It’s all set up nicely for a big game at Anfield next week too, with United on the road again after a trip to Turf Moor.
Ferdinand tried to restrain himself on BT Sport while analysing United’s win over Watford in the FA Cup. He admitted he would be “excited 100% to see United go to Anfield as league leaders.
“I don’t want to jump the gun like I’ve done before,” said Ferdinand on BT Sport, cited by the Mirror. “I don’t want to become a meme again. But listen, as a football fan, you can’t help it — it’s part of it to get hyped up, become emotional about things.
“About Man United sitting pretty at the top of the league after the game against Burnley — we hope — I’ll be excited 100%.
“But then it’s a massive game after that against Liverpool to really put a marker down and say actually we’re not just here fly-bys, we’re here to stay.”
Of course, it will be difficult not to get excited when/if United go top of the table on Tuesday night but it’s still too early to talk about winning the title.
We’ve suffered a number of setbacks this season and I think there’s more on the way.
What we need to realise is Solskjaer’s job will take time. The question is are we happy with the progress? That’s something that we’ll come back to at the end of the season, but I’m feeling good about the manager right now.
