Facundo Pellistri tests positive for COVID-19, ruining FA Cup debut chance

Manchester United youngster Facundo Pellistri has tested positive for COVID-19, ruining his chances of making his first-team debut in the FA Cup this weekend.

The Red Devils host Watford in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday and we thought the 19-year-old would make his debut after joining the club on deadline day in the summer from Penarol.

However, it has been confirmed that the Uruguayan winger has tested positive for coronavirus and is isolating at home. It is understand that Pellistri is asymptomatic at the moment.

“We inform you that Facundo Pellistri, Manchester United player and member of the TMA team, tested positive for COVID-19,” wrote Equipo Talent Management Associates, as cited by the Metro.

“He is doing the corresponding quarantine at home, without symptoms and complying with the physical care indicated by his club.

“We appreciate the messages received in the last hours. Soon he will be training again with his teammates.”

A concern I would have following this news is Pellistri being in and around the first-team training in the lead up to tomorrow’s game, but there have been no further reports of positive tests emerging from Old Trafford.

Manchester United will be looking to get back to winning ways after crashing out of the Carabao Cup semi-finals, losing 2-0 after goals from John Stones and Fernandinho.

It’s unfortunate news for Pellistri but hopefully he gets a shot in the next round of the competition should United beat Watford.

We’ll have updates from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s press conference in the next hour.
