Manchester United have a lot to play for in the New Year after beating Aston Villa and easing themselves into second place where they sit level on points with Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must now build on the current momentum that has his side in debates over this season’s Premier League title race.
Another task for Solskjaer is continuing to build and shape his squad for the long-term — deciding which players should be signed and which players need to be moved on.
According to The Athletic (£), four United players will be allowed to depart in the current transfer window. It’s not clear whether the club will accept loan deals for the following four players, but it seems like their days at Old Trafford are numbered: Sergio Romero, Marcus Rojo, Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard.
None of the players listed play very often and I doubt there will be many fans saddened to see the back of them.
Romero’s an excellent goalkeeper who could be starting every week elsewhere.
Then there’s Lingard, an academy graduate, who could move and work on getting back into the England side. It doesn’t help his case that he plays so infrequently, which makes it difficult to perform and build confidence.
While I think Jones could still offer something to a side in the Premier League, Rojo could be just as difficult when it comes to attracting interest for his signature.
