Alan Shearer has named Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes in his Premier League team of the year.

Few have had such a profound impact within 12 months of their arrival at Old Trafford, but Fernandes is indispensable and the leader without the armband under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Portuguese midfielder inspired United into an improbable third place finish after signing from Sporting Lisbon in January.

And he has been vital in United finishing the year in second place in the league within touching distance of rivals Liverpool.

Unsurprisingly, Shearer’s team of 2020 is dominated by Liverpool players with Mo Salah, Jordan Henderson, Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk and Allison all included.

But in 2020, Fernandes has scored 26 goals and 17 assists in just 45 games, an incredible return for United’s creative fulcrum that cannot be ignored.

Despite not performing at his optimum level against Wolves, Fernandes provided the vital assist as Marcus Rashford won it at the death with a deflected left-footed strike.
