Bruno Fernandes might not wear the armband – but he is the leader at Manchester United.
Fernandes leads by example on and off the pitch and it’s rare for a player to have such a profound impact on a club within the first 12 months of his arrival.
The totemic Portuguese playmaker demands the best from himself and his teammates, driving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side with ambition, desire and quality.
United’s over reliance on Fernandes may be a concern but he has long proven he is indispensable in Solskjaer’s setup.
Fernandes took his Premier League goal tally to nine for the season with a double in the thrashing over Leeds United on Sunday, and some supporters noticed his latest example of leadership after his first strike.
After firing home for United’s third in the first-half, Fernandes was evidently shown given positional advice and mentoring to Daniel James, who was making his first United start since October.
James went on to score in a fine individual performance in the emphatic 6-2 victory over Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Fernandes’ qualities can only breed confidence and improve the players around him at Old Trafford.
