Former Manchester United winger Andrei Kanchelskis has slammed current Reds’ captain Harry Maguire and insists he lacks the required leadership qualities to drive his old side forward.
Kanchelskis, now retired, spent four-years at Old Trafford after joining from Shakhtar Donetsk back in 1991.
The ex-winger featured in 130 matches for United and was directly involved in 44 goals in all competitions during a spell which saw him lift seven major trophies, including two league titles.
However, despite owing a lot to his old club side, the Russian ex-pro, who has always been known for his outspoken nature has not minced his words when weighing-in on the situation surrounding this current United side.
In a savage interview with American Gambler, Kanchelskis has singled out captain Maguire as he believes the English centre-back has some major flaws.
“He’s not someone that inspires you like a Roy Keane. He’s a little bit quiet and doesn’t really sparkle,” Kanchelskis said. “You look at how Roy Keane and Bryan Robson used to fight on the pitch, he’s a little bit quiet and needs some determination and be a bit more aggressive.
“This is football; it’s not ballet.”
Maguire, 27, joined United from Leicester City during the summer of 2019 in a transfer that cost the Reds a whopping £78.3m, as per Transfermarkt.
Having been named as his side’s captain, Maguire has become a source of constant discussion regarding his defensive ability.
Conversations debating whether or not Maguire is worth his eye-watering price-tag have perhaps been intensified, especially during a period of time which has seen Virgil Van Dijk spearhead a monumental transformation of rivals Liverpool.
