Everton director of football Marcel Brands is a leading candidate for the same role at Manchester United, according to reports.
Brands’ stock is at an all-time high now as he’s the man responsible for a summer which saw Everton land James Rodriguez, Allan and Dbdoulaye Doucoure.
But with The Sun linking Brands with a switch to Old Trafford, a move the report claims he would find ‘hard to refuse’, it is worth noting that Serie A outfit AS Roma are also reportedly courting his services, as per Il Tempo (via Sport Witness).
After a change of ownership it’s only normal that Roma will shake things up in the coming years.
That said, last summer United missed out on their priority target Jadon Sancho, who ended up staying at Borussia Dortmund. The club should be better prepared for the transfer window with a director of football in place.
Brands, a 58-year-old ex-player from the Netherlands, had roles at RKC Waalwijk, AZ Alkmaar, PSV Eindhoven and joined Everton in 2018 where he has revamped the club’s recruitment policy.
The Sun describes Brands as ‘the ideal man to help United’ — while speculating that the club is finally ready to take the plunge and appoint a director of football.
Even with a DoF it is unknown how having one in place would change United’s structure.
The first question from us would be could this mean the end of Ed Woodward’s involvement in transfers? Sadly, I fear not.
