Harry Maguire has been known to score goals despite being a centre-back for years. He may not score anywhere near enough for Manchester United but it was nice to see him get on the scoresheet tonight.

Even though writing this as an Irishman after watching our lads struggle in defeat, it helps that it was only a friendly and Maguire got his name on the scoresheet.

It has been a difficult few months for the United skipper.

From the scandal in Greece to a blip in form, some fans have even called for Maguire to be dropped from the team. It’s not an opinion I shared but it was getting to a stage that Solskjaer would have been forced to make a decision to take him out of the spotlight.

Solskjaer stuck by his man, as has England boss Gareth Southgate who made him captain against Republic of Ireland.

Maguire headed England into the lead just 18 minutes into the match. Then Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin added to England’s tally to clinch the win.

On top of that, Maguire also attempted more shots than any other player on the pitch against Ireland (4), as per Squawka Football.

That’s a brilliant stat!
