Alan Shearer selected just one Manchester United player in his Premier League team of the week after the Reds alleviated pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a gritty 3-1 at Everton.

United’s victory, secured through a Bruno Fernandes double and Edinson Cavani’s first for the club, avoids more questions being asked about Solskjaer’s future and Mauricio Pochettino during the international break.

The performance at Goodison Park was far from vintage but there were plenty of positive signs as Solskjaer’s men made it seven successive league away wins.

There were several notable performers, but it is unsurprising to see Fernandes being the player that made his way into Shearer’s team for the weekend.

Fernandes clawed United back into the game in the first-half with a superb header and his pin-point cross minutes later found it’s way into Jordan Pickford’s net with Marcus Rashford not making contact with his attempted flick.

He was later clinical on a four-on-two counter-attack to delay before reversing to Cavani who couldn’t miss from close range to seal three vital points.

The Portuguese playmaker made three decisive impacts with moments of quality that the Reds have been missing in recent weeks.

However, it must be noted that cases could have also been made for the likes of Harry Maguire and Fred, who both vindicated their selection by stepping up on Merseyside.

Shearer’s side is deservedly dominated by Aston Villa players after Dean Smith’s side humiliated Arsenal 3-0 at the Emirates on Sunday evening.
