Talksport pundit Ally McCoist has questioned the long-term suitability of Edinson Cavani at Manchester United.
Cavani arrived as one of four signings on a hectic deadline day to close a haphazard transfer window at Old Trafford.
The 33-year-old had been a free agent all summer after his Paris Saint-Germain contract expired in June but United waited until the final days of the window to seize their opportunity to sign the prolific goalscorer.
As per BBC Sport, Cavani will miss Saturday’s trip to Newcastle United because he is self-isolating after moving to Manchester.
The Uruguayan veteran has not been part of an athlete bubble since being released by PSG meaning Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s two preferred centre forward options are missing with Anthony Martial suspended.
But he will be available to face his old club in the Champions League group stages three days later.
While Cavani comes to United with a pedigree that can be matched by few strikers in world football, former Rangers boss McCoist is under no illusions about him ultimately being a stop-gap signing.
McCoist suggested that in the trophy-laden Sir Alex Ferguson era, United would have not been hesitant in signing one of the elite strikers such as Erling Haaland or Harry Kane.
United’s failed pursuit of Haaland before his switch to Borussia Dortmund has been widely documented and prizing Kane away from Spurs would be a near impossible task.
But the point stands that Solskjaer didn’t acquire his prime targets this summer, leaving him short in key areas for the new season.
