Sergio Romero’s wife has elaborated on her extraordinary transfer deadline rant discussing Manchester United’s failure to sell her husband in the summer window.
Romero has been the consummate professional during his five years deputising for David De Gea between the sticks at Old Trafford.
But his desire to leave this summer was completely understandable given the return of Dean Henderson from two successful loans which meant he relinquished his position as no.2.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Romero is no longer considered a part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans and was approached by Everton in the final hours of the window.
The Argentine veteran is largely recognised as one of the most reliable deputy goalkeepers in the Premier League and United’s decision not to sanction a move for their third choice shot-stopper seems bizarre and possibly unfair.
Romero’s wife Eliana Guercio shared her raw frustration over United’s treatment of her husband via Instagram on deadline day.
“Sergio Romero worked hard for his club,” she said, as per the MEN.
“Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him.
“He helped the team reach four finals / semi-finals and then he was left on the bench only to lose them all. It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go. RESPECT FOR ONCE!”
Guercio has since added more context to her social media rant, saying she was saddened that Romero was not given the chance to join a new club.
“It was a very stressful day for us,” Guercio elaborated, as quoted by the MEN.
“I have to say that I am sad, very sad on one and happy on the other hand.
“I am sad because Sergio deserved the opportunity to go to another club, he has shown what he can do and he worked every day.
“Right now he is training, just like he has been every day since he was in Argentina because he is a professional. He loves what he does and gives his all every day. I have known ever since I met about his passion and his work and his family obviously.
“It is a very sad day because he desired the chance to go to another club. He has worked hard every day for this, because he gives his all for United and I think that his chances of playing for United have gone down.
“This doesn’t sound right to me. It doesn’t appear honest or professional or serious that they have to let him go. I am very sad because of this.
“On the other hand I am happy because all of the fans of the club have shown all their amazing support.”
