Manchester United’s only signing so far this summer Donny van de Beek adds real quality to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield options. This morning the manager was asked about starting a game with a midfield trio of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek.

Although it’s a mouth-watering prospect to see three world-class midfielders play together in the same midfield, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tends to opt for a defensive-minded player to balance things out in the middle.

United would be too light defensively in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 with one of Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay or Fred. And I still think we should sign a better player than those three to carry out that job.

“I think good players can play well together but also Scot, Nemanja and Fred are good players, so competition for places, lots of combinations, different systems, so we’ll see them together at some point,” Solskjaer told the press, as per Manchester Evening News.

Unless Solskjaer changes his system drastically, which he doesn’t need to do because of one signing, I can’t see United starting many games with Pogba, Fernandes and Van de Beek. We are much more likely to see all three on the pitch when United are chasing games.

Thomas Partey at Atletico Madrid is a player I thought United would have been after but I guess other areas (Glazer pockets) take priority.
