Ally McCoist shares the popular view that Manchester United will get nowhere near a Premier League title challenge after losing their opening game to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

United were outfought and outthought in a humbling to defeat to Roy Hodgson’s men, with familiar problems rearing their head once again.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were defensively abject and looked bereft of ideas in an attacking sense with Donny van de Beek’s goal on his debut the only real positive.

Plenty of supporters have overreacted in the wake of the defeat but there was little evidence for optimism on the pitch to mask an extremely frustrating transfer window.

Ex-Rangers manager and TalkSport pundit McCoist was confused by Solskjaer’s selection decisions against Palace, questioning the decisions to leave out the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mason Greenwood and Van de Beek from the starting eleven.

In Solskjaer’s defence, the Norwegian confirmed before kick-off that Wan-Bissaka had only returned to training last Monday so may not have been ready to start the opening game.

The double midfield pivot of Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay performed poorly and Solskjaer may have chosen to start Van de Beek in hindsight.

United’s players looked lethargic and Palace capitalised with their sharpness having already secured victory in their opening game against Southampton.

McCoist expects United to face another battle for top four this season and believes the Reds could finish at least 20 points behind the eventual Champions.
