Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has weighed in on his old club’s current goalkeeping situation which sees the youthful Dean Henderson rival the experienced David De Gea for the right to be the Reds’ number-one.

Henderson, 23, has spent the last two seasons out on loan with Chris Wilders’ Sheffield United during a two-year spell which saw him guide the Blades back to the big time and help them finish in the Premier League’s top-half the following season.

Henderson’s impressive and consistent form saw him be rewarded with a new-bumper five-year deal earlier this summer, as per Sky Sports.

After being denied another loan spell and instead promoted to his parent club’s first-team the Englishman looks set to take-on regular keeper De Gea for the right to be the Reds’ first choice goalkeeper.

In light of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to stick with De Gea ahead of the Reds’ Premier League opener later this afternoon against Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace, former United defender Neville has issued a shock admission claiming that Henderson should focus on cup competitions.

Speaking live on Sky Sports, Neville said: “Dean [Henderson] is a million miles away from replacing De Gea, the level of scrutiny playing for Manchester United is another level. He should focus on cup competitions.”
