Roma manager provides Chris Smalling transfer update

Roma are still keen on signing Chris Smalling this summer. Manager Paulo Fonseca makes it no secret.

The Manchester United centre-back’s future is in murky waters but Roma are interested in signing him permanently after last season’s impressive loan stint.

Roma boss Paulo Fonseca’s quotes on Smalling were tweeted this afternoon, by GOAL reporter Charlotte Duncker.

“I am in regular contact with Chris Smalling, I spoke to him yesterday,” Fonseca revealed. “He wants to come back to Roma and we want to have him back. I think that there could be an update over the next few days.”

The only conclusion I can see is Smalling joining Roma but they’ve haggled over a deal all summer move.

Smalling is not the first defender I would be getting rid of but he’s one of the players who needs to be moved on.

No manager gets to select the order of his departures, so if you think Phil Jones or Marcos Rojo should be sold first based on the fact they’re not as good, football business doesn’t work that way.

It’s good news that United seem to have a buyer for Smalling.
