Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that he will be sticking with defender Harry Maguire as his 2020-21 club captain.
Maguire, 27, has endured a difficult summer after being arrested in Greece last month after being involved in a violent altercation with another group of tourists as well as Greek police officers.
The United defender was originally found guilty on three charges of assault, resisting arrest and bribery, however, a victorious appeal meant he will now be awarded with a full retrial scheduled to take place next year, as per Sky News.
The controversy surrounding Maguire’s involvement in the Greek fracas led to England manager Gareth Southgate dropping him from the international squad’s recent Nations League fixtures, as per BBC Sport.
However, domestic gaffer Solskjaer has refused to take the same stance and has instead opted to back his centre-back by way of naming him as the Red’s club captain ahead of the new 2020-21 season which got underway earlier today, as per ManUtd.com.
When asked how Maguire will feature in his manager’s plans next season in light of a turbulent summer, Solskjaer said: “Of course, Harry, as you said, had a difficult summer.
“He didn’t have a long break. His break was different to others as we gave him a few more days and, after, he’s come back and looked fine.
“He’s handled it really well and, of course, I’ll be here to support him. He is going to be our captain.
“We’ll just leave Harry and his people and the process to run.
“For me, he is a top, an absolute top human being and has always been a positive guy with the right values. So I really hope we can see Harry performing at his best.”
United’s Premier League opener is next weekend when they will host Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace at Old Trafford as Maguire looks set to lead his club side out in the same way he did throughout the duration of last season in a campaign which saw him play every Premier League for United.
