Steven Bergwijn wanted Man United’s new signing to join Tottenham

during the Group E match of the UEFA Champions League between Ajax and AEK Athens at Johan Cruyff Arena on September 19, 2018 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Donny van de Beek has spoken out about his Manchester United transfer and rumours linking him with Tottenham.

The Netherlands international admits fellow Dutchman Steven Bergwijn contacted him asking him if he’d be joining him in north London. The wheels will come completely off the bus if José Mourinho doesn’t get his way in the transfer market, and hopefully Van de Beek makes the blow worse by scoring against them next season.

Van de Beek wasn’t going to turn down the opportunity to sign for Manchester United because Spurs came knocking. That would be crazy but we don’t blame Bergwijn for trying.

He would have been an ideal replacement for Christian Eriksen a year ago.

United’s latest signing was quoted in a report from the London Evening Standard, saying: “Steven Bergwijn texted me to see whether I would play for Spurs. But I chose United.

“I felt ready for the next step. This was the time to go. That is why I was on the phone with my agent last weekend. In the end, there was an agreement.”

The former Ajax midfielder hasn’t kicked a ball in the Premier League but we are excited to see what he can bring to the table. Hopefully come the end of the coming season Spurs will be kicking themselves even harder.

Judging on his performances in the Champions League, Van de Beek looked a player that needed to take that next step after outgrowing the Eredivisie. He’s joined the biggest league in the world, the biggest club, and everyone is watching.
