Manchester United reportedly left it too late to join the race to sign Lille centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes having only contacted his agents ‘days ago’ according to leading journalist Fabrizo Romano.

Malaghaes, 22, has become one of Europe’s most sought after defenders after enduring an impressive breakthrough campaign with French side Lille.

The young Brazilian featured 34 times in all competitions last season as he helped guide his side to an impressive top-four Ligue 1 finish.

It looked earlier this year like Everton were in the driving seat to snap-up the highly-rated defender, however, as the saga developed the talented centre-back is now embroiled in a summer transfer battle between Arsenal and Italian giants Napoli, as per The Guardian.

It was reported earlier this summer by Sky Sports that Magalhaes was also being tracked by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he looks to add quality to his back-line.

However, according to leading football journalist Fabrizo Romano that was not the case and the Reds did in fact leave it too late to enter into the race to secure the centre-back’s services after only contacting his representatives ‘days ago’.
