Dimitar Berbatov believes Manchester United need to acquire a centre-back to help accelerate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s rebuild in this summer’s transfer window.
Solskjaer’s preferred pairing Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have come under fire in the wake of the Europa League semi-final defeat to Sevilla after conceding two avoidable goals.
Sevilla’s late winner was particularly frustrating on a United front, after elementary defending from the central defensive pairing allowed Luuk De Jong to deliver the crucial sucker punch at the back post.
United should not have conceded from a fairly innocuous situation with plenty back to deal with ex-Manchester City player Jesus Navas’ cross.
Former United striker Berbatov believes the defeat to Sevilla exposed the defensive weaknesses and thinks the area that needs prioritising most this summer has been highlighted.
“The defeat showed that United need to strengthen their squad this summer,” he told Betfair.
They need a centre-back for sure. Midfield and up front seems to be ok. Paul Pogba looks likely to stay and I would like to see Scott McTominay get back in the team.
But United need more depth, Ole made his first substitution very late last night when things weren’t going well. It does show he trusts his first 11 a lot, but maybe it shows he doesn’t trust his bench so much.
United do still require an elite forward and interest in Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho is an open secret.
But in order to build a team capable of challenging for the Premier League title, a stable defensive platform is needed and there is uncertainty over the reliability of the current centre-back pairing.
