Manchester United winger Tahith Chong has joined up with Werder Bremen’s pre-season training camp in Austria after agreeing a loan move to the Bundesliga outfit.
The Holland U21 international recently signed a new contract at Old Trafford, which keeps him at the club until June 2022, with the option to extend the deal by a further year.
Chong joined United from Feyenoord four years ago and has been a fringe player in the first team this past season. His move to Germany will hopefully see him get more minutes on the pitch for their first-team along with the opportunity to express himself in the final third.
“Manchester United winger Tahith Chong, a product of the club’s fabled Academy, is set to gain valuable first-team experience in the forthcoming new season by joining Werder Bremen on loan,” a United statement reads.
“The talented 20-year-old will spend the full 2020/21 campaign in Germany, and could make his competitive debut in a month’s time with the Bundesliga due to begin on 18 September.”
This is what Chong told the Werder Bremen website after signing his loan deal: “It’s definitely in the back of your head when you come here.
“The club’s history and reputation for helping players like Gnabry and De Bruyne advance their careers is always good to hear, so I’m sure this is the right place to continue my development.
“Once it came out that Werder were interested in me, he sent me a text to say that I should get in touch if I had any questions about the club or making the move to Germany and he’d be happy to help, which was really good of him.
“I’d seen [Davy Klassen] play at Ajax when I was younger so it’s amazing to be playing alongside him now!
“I already knew about the club and how big Werder are in Germany when I first spoke to the coach. The decision was a very easy one. The approach of the club is also excellent so I knew straightaway that this will be the right team for me.
“Having watched games from last season, it’s clear that there are a lot of young players coming through in the Bundesliga and that’s really exciting to see. You can see it here in Bremen as well with players who are the same age or younger than me!
“My main aim is to play as much as possible and to help Werder to win as many games as we can.”
Bremen are out in Zillerdeich for a pre-season training camp and they’ve recorded several funny clips since Chong’s arrival.
They even asked him a trick question: Man City or Liverpool?
United fans will be delighted to hear he doesn’t give an answer.
