Manchester United’s rumoured interest in Wolves striker Raul Jimenez is splitting the fanbase on social media.
Portuguese public service broadcaster RTP published an extraordinary report on Friday suggesting United were about to complete the transfer of the prolific frontman.
This speculation was quickly dismissed, with the Manchester Evening News reporting that United sources have said there is ‘nothing in’ the rumours.
However, the MEN did acknowledge that United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is an admirer of Jimenez, who has established himself as one of the best strikers in the Premier League.
The Mexican international netted 26 goals in 53 Wolves appearances this term as he helped the Midlands club to a seventh placed finish.
Anthony Martial has enjoyed his best goalscoring season at Old Trafford, diminishing Solskjaer’s need for a proven goalscorer.
Martial scored the same amount of goals in the league as Jimenez (17), despite missing an eight week period through injury.
But United still lack goalscoring threat when the electric Frenchman is not on the pitch and an addition of a quality forward could provide strong competition in attacking areas.
Solskjaer has Odion Ighalo as his striker back up until January but used the Nigerian sparingly after the restart.
Plenty of United fans on Twitter have weighed in on the debate surrounding Jimenez:
I think Raul Jimenez would be a really shrewd signing for United. Experienced, proven in the PL, scores goals and is a really good hold up player. United teams have ALWAYS had options up front. He’d add to Martial, not replace him and would be great for Rashford/Greenwood.

Is there anything in Raul Jimenez to United?, would love a another Mexican supersub, Ole copying SAF’s whole flow.

Honest answers, does Raul Jimenez start ahead of Martial?

Raul Jimenez is 29 years old, wouldn’t fit in with how Solskjaer wants his team to play and Wolves would want to sell for around £50-60 million. That’s all I have to say.

Not a priority, age 29, too expensive, doesn’t have the pace that Rashford, Martial, Greenwood, Sancho* got. Too many reasons why not.

Would seriously stiffle Greenwood’s development. Considering we have Martial and Greenwood as first team players and Ighalo as rotation CF, I don’t see a point in getting Jimenez now. Yes he is a very good player and a more direct striker. Also academy players need a chance #MUFC

Fantastic player, all round goal scorer & proven striker, but with the crop of players Ole & Ed has been signing for United after the departure of Jose I don't think #Mufc would want to consider Raul Jimenez because if age is anything to go by then I think it's a capital NO!
