Manchester United fans could have been forgiven for getting overexcited after the Reds became the first side to win four consecutive Premier League games by a three goal margin.
Thumping victories over Sheffield United, Brighton, Bournemouth and Aston Villa yielded some exceptional football and positives aplenty for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United’s first-choice attacking quartet of Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were all clinical in front of goal and there were signs of a frontline that is capable of competing for the major honours.
But United’s three most recent outings gave supporters a sobering reminder of the work that still needs to be done in the transfer window for Solskjaer to complete his Old Trafford rebuild.
The gut-wrenching draw at home to Southampton, the unconvincing display away to Crystal Palace and the humbling FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea at Wembley that ended the 19-game unbeaten run showed where the frailties still lie within the squad. Visiting gambling and casino sites in the UK may be one way to take your mind off that FA Cup result last week.
Admittedly, it is improbable we will live through a time like this where games are played in such a concentrated period.
But when United’s best attackers are tired and are in clear need of a rest, the lack of strength in depth to replace them is concerning.
United’s attack was virtually non-existent without Martial, Greenwood and Pogba against Chelsea, as Daniel James struggled to make any real impact.
Bruno Fernandes is clearly due a rest as well but you can’t help but feel United’s chances of winning a match would be hindered considerably if he was replaced by the likes of Andreas Pereira and Jessie Lingard.
Solskjaer needs more quality options to rotate to keep his best players fresh and performing at their optimum level.
And that is why a move for Jadon Sancho is still essential in the summer transfer window. The future of the Borussia Dortmund forward will undoubtedly be the transfer saga of the summer but his signing is key to United progressing further.
As reported by BBC Sport, United have made Sancho a leading transfer target and are ready to make a move for him this summer.
Stretty News exclusively reported that Dortmund are interested in a move for Sassuolo winger Jeremie Boga, who could be being lined up as a replacement for Sancho.
Sancho is one of the elite forwards in European football and would complement United’s current attacking options perfectly.
He can play anywhere across the front three, but is adept from the right-wing that is still a problem position for the Reds despite the recent brilliance of Greenwood.
Sancho’s goal record in the Bundesliga is extraordinary; the England international scored 17 goals and laid on 16 assists in 25 league starts this term.
He can add an extra ruthless edge to the Reds in the final third, and bring the best out of the likes of Rashford, Martial and Greenwood.
