It sounds increasingly likely that Manchester United will spend money on a centre-back to play alongside Harry Maguire.
The England international has not been error free by any means, but he’s had a decent first season in which he’s become a leader on and off the pitch.
Victor Lindelof doesn’t quite cut the mustard and the manager doesn’t trust Eric Bailly. I think that much we can all agree on, but when it comes to which defender should partner Maguire next season we are bound to have disagreements.
There’s Axel Tuanzebe, who has tons of potential but can’t get a break from injuries. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may not want to give up on the young defender, but United are still in transition and the time for results is now.
We’ve all heard the rumours linking United with Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake (via Manchester Evening News) and Aston Villa’s Tyron Mings (via Express), but AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli has not been in the United gossip columns for some time.
According to Rob Dawson of ESPN, Romagnoli is among the names in the frame as United search for a new centre-back.
From the names listed I hope they are watching more — simply to compile, compare and come to the best conclusion. This morning we brought you an exclusive on Manchester United not being interested in Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.
It’s just another name thrown into the hat for now.
United spent big money to bring Maguire to United last summer and it makes sense to do the same this summer, in order to really strengthen, but Romagnoli is not going to cost anywhere near the same amount. And neither will Ake or Mings for that matter.
There would still be some competition in the squad with Lindelof and Bailly…
