It sounds like Nemanja Matic has been rewarded for his terrific form since the turn of the year.

The Serbian midfielder has been Manchester United’s best midfield anchor this season and there’s been a number of candidates in the running for that status in the past 12 months.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Matic has signed a new deal at Manchester United which will keep him at Old Trafford until 2023 at least.

The report claims a contract was signed ‘in the last hours’ and that he had a variety of offers on the table, including an opportunity to move to Italy but in the end he opted to stay in Manchester.

Although Matic is 32 in August and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems determined to build a side around youth, the manager knows the importance of having experienced winners in his squad.

Matic won the Premier League twice during his time at Chelsea, not to mention the Primeira Liga with Benfica. His role in the team is a disciplined one and possibly something Scott McTominay can grow into later in his career.

This is good news and I feel I would be reacting differently 12 months ago when his place in the team was subject to criticism.
