Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has agreed with Gary Neville’s recent comments that United are not yet at a level to be considered title challengers.

Despite United’s impressive form since the sport restarted manager Solskjaer believes his side are still a way-off the standard required to compete for the title next season.

During his midweek punditry commitments, ex-United legend Neville said that ‘there’s still some work to do in the transfer market to get this team to a title-winning team’ and hinted that his former side may need as many as four new additions before they can be a real force again.

In light of United’s stunning performance on Tuesday against Brighton and Hove Albion, as quoted by Manchester Evening News, Solskjaer said: “Gary is right in a lot of things he says and, of course, we cannot think we’re there. If you look at the table, we’re nowhere near where we should be.

“Consistency has to be improved and we still have to improve on many aspects of the game. I don’t know how many points we’re behind the top two but Gary’s right – there’s definitely not going to be any complacency and thinking, ‘we’ve cracked it’ because we’ve got so much to do.

“It’s an enjoyable journey. We can see improvements but, yes, we need to make one or two – or more – very good decisions. It’s going to be an important summer, definitely.”

With United set to take-on Bournemouth tomorrow afternoon, Solskjaer will be hopeful his side can break into the top-four for the first time since last August having seen third and fourth place Leicester City and Chelsea both drop vital points to Everton and West Ham, respectively.

Addressing how decisive the final day of the Premier League could be in a round of fixtures which sees all of the chasing top-four teams play one another, Solskjaer said: “I think the last round is going to be vital – you’ve got Chelsea versus Wolverhampton and us against Leicester – so there might be a three point advantage for us or for Leicester and it’s still an important game,” he added. “I can’t see the difference between us and Leicester being a lot more than three points either way, the same with Chelsea and Wolverhampton.

“So it’s looking exciting, it’s a short space of time. So many games so lots of things can happen but yes I think it will go down to the last game.”
