Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha has addressed those rumours involving him and David Moyes’ daughter during his brief time at Manchester United.
In an exclusive interview with Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube show, The Locker Room, the Palace winger claims that he had a difficult spell at Old Trafford from 2013-15, most of which was spent out on loan.
Zaha only made four appearances for the first-team and he struggled for opportunities under Moyes.
Their relationship appeared to become strained by speculation regarding Zaha and Moyes’ daughter Lauren, which the player claims he was given no advice on how to deal with.
I remember seeing the rumours at first on social media and thinking it was only a joke. I don’t think anyone believed that he was sleeping with the manager’s daughter — but it became persistent and the club or Moyes should have done something to clear the air.
“No one at the club at all told me anything, I didn’t know what to do whatsoever,” Zaha told The Locker Room.
“I remember tweeting something about it saying ‘silly rumours’ because it was getting too much so I had to say something myself and then I remember the club media messaging me saying ‘you shouldn’t have done that, you shouldn’t have done this’ and I’m thinking you haven’t helped me.
“I’m here by myself, struggling because people are telling me I’ve slept with the manager’s daughter and that’s why you’re not playing me.”
It wasn’t long before Zaha was sent out on loan to Cardiff City. When he returned to Old Trafford, the Scot had been sacked as United manager.
There was still no room for Zaha to breakthrough though as he’d be sent on loan back to Crystal Palace before re-signing for the Eagles permanently.
“The funny thing is, it’s carried on for so long I felt like, is the manager not going to come and have a word with me over this?” the winger added.
“That’s how I felt and I’m thinking this is ridiculous man. Up to this day I still get people that think that’s true and I’ve never even met his daughter.”
