Mark Hughes’ most important match.
This week Dale & Mike discuss Saul Niguez’s bluff and Odion Ighalo’s loan extension.
The game we focus on turns out to be Mark Hughes’ most important match ever, as Manchester United won the European Cup Winners Cup against Barcelona’s ‘Dream Team’.
The year 1991 saw United represent English football clubs in the European CWC for the first time after a 5-year ban saw English clubs excluded from European competition following the Heysel disaster.
Mark Hughes, who features in this week’s Icons of Old Trafford piece, scored twice in a hard-fought battle with this arguably being Sir Alex Ferguson’s most important victory but equally crucial to Hughes’ career as a player. The Scot was back in terms of European success and United had announced themselves before eventually dominating English football.
It’s a match that you can watch back to this day and buzz from as around 25,000 Reds travelled to Rotterdam in the rain. They behaved well despite there being a sense of nervousness prior to the game following the ban that cost all European clubs, not just Liverpool.
