Manchester United remain interested in signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner this summer, despite the fact he seems destined for a switch to bitterest rivals Liverpool.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must bolster his attack this summer, regardless of the transfer uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the future of Odion Ighalo.
ESPN report that while there is a belief within the club that Werner is likely to eventually end up at Anfield, he fits the mould of player Solskjaer is looking to build his squad around and is still being monitored closely at Old Trafford.
United require a goalscoring forward to provide healthy competition for Anthony Martial up front and they don’t come much more prolific than the deadly Werner.
The 24-year-old has netted 30 goals in 38 Leipzig appearances this term, and has impressed in the shop window upon the Bundesliga’s return to action.
Werner could play anywhere across the front three and would prove a true asset for United with his counter-attacking threat and natural finishing ability.
Interestingly, reputable BILD journalist Christian Falk has added further fuel to the Werner rumours, claiming that United, Chelsea and Liverpool are all keen on the frontman.
But remarkably, he has also suggested that no club is prepared to pay the €55m buyout clause in Werner’s contract.
You would think a player of Werner’s obvious qualities would be worth even more than his buyout clause. But perhaps this is an indication that clubs are not prepared to part ways with huge transfer fees this summer given the financial hit they have taken due to COVID-19.
