Manchester United target Rabbi Matondo insists he is happy at Shalke amid links with a move to the Premier League.
Matondo has emerged as an attainable transfer alternative to Borussia Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho this summer.
The uncertainty around the transfer window means United may not be able to secure their number one target and the 19-year-old winger represents a much cheaper option than superstar Sancho.
But Matondo is focused on delivering good performances for Shalke with the spotlight firmly fixed on the Bundesliga after it was the first major league to return after the coronavirus pandemic.
“Obviously there are people talking, asking me and stuff but I am not really thinking about it,” the Welshman told the Manchester Evening News.
Matondo has taken a similar career path to Sancho in leaving Manchester City’s youth setup to play first-team football in Germany.
His venture to the continent has been a success so far as he has established himself as a fully-fledged member of David Wagner’s first-team squad, without setting the world alight.
MEN have previously reported that Matondo has a €60m release clause in his Shalke contract but United are confident they would be able to seal a transfer in a similar price bracket to the move for Daniel James from Swansea.
“I haven’t really thought about it like that,” Matondo added when asked about a potential return to to the Premier League.
“I just want to do well at Schalke and give back what they have invested into me.
“I just want to give my all and then whatever happens in the future happens. Never say never.”
Matondo is an exciting raw talent with plenty of potential. But he is not the ready-made solution to United’s problem on the right-flank and Solskjaer may benefit from remaining patient in his Sancho chase and instead promoting the likes of Largie Ramazani from the academy to bolster his attacking options.
