Borussia Dortmund midfielder Emre Can has confirmed that he would never play for Manchester United because of his ties to former club Liverpool.
Can played for United’s bitterest rivals for four seasons from 2014-2018 before moving to Juventus and subsequently Dortmund.
Despite his obvious connection with Liverpool, Can was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in January as United looked to bolster their midfield options.
A report from Sky Sports in October claimed United were considering a move for the midfielder who had fallen out of favour with Juve boss Mauricio Sarri.
While we were never keen on the transfer anyway, Can has clarified that he will never wear the red of United.
“The comparison fits,” Can told SportBILD (via Sport Witness) when comparing United and German giants Bayern Munich.
“Both are record champions and have huge strength. In addition, big names like Bastian Schweinsteiger and Owen Hargreaves played for both clubs.
“But I would never play for United because of my time in Liverpool. My heart won’t let me do that. The rivalry between the clubs is really huge.”
Can has also urged Dortmund teammate Jadon Sancho to reject a transfer to Old Trafford this summer as he does not see United as a more attractive proposition than his current club.
Sancho is seen as the perfect solution to United’s void on the right-wing and is said to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s priority target in the summer transfer window.
Manchester Evening News report Solskjaer is pressing ahead with his rebuild this summer and still sees Sancho as an attainable player despite the uncertainty around the coronavirus outbreak.
“I see no reason to put Manchester United above Borussia Dortmund,” the 26-year-old added.
“Not from a sporting side and not because of the appeal. I’d tell him to stay put and let’s play together forever.”
Obviously, we have a contrasting view to Can and believe the lure of returning to the Premier League, playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world and forming one of the most exciting front threes in European football with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford makes United an enticing option for the England international.
