Report: Man United serious candidates to sign prolific forward on free transfer

Manchester United are reportedly contenders to sign Uruguayan goalscorer Edinson Cavani this summer.

Cavani’s contract at Paris Saint-Germain expires this summer which means he will be available on a free transfer.

French newspaper L’Equipe (via Sport Witness) claim that United are ‘serious candidates’ in the race to sign Cavani with the club’s ‘significant financial means’ said to be a key factor.

Cavani has started just 7 Ligue 1 games this term, scoring four goals.

The 33-year-old was linked with a move to Old Trafford in January as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer desperately scoured the market for a short-term striker fix.

Instead, the Reds ended up with the deadline day loan signing of Shanghai Shenhua forward Odion Ighalo.

Ighalo was enjoying a fruitful loan spell at his boyhood club before the coronavirus pandemic put an indefinite suspension on English football.

Solskjaer still requires a centre forward this summer to finally replace Romelu Lukaku as he continues to shape his United rebuild.

But the Norwegian is focusing on much younger players as he looks to build a team that can achieve success in the future rather than just stop-gap options.

That is why we see little truth in the Cavani links and United would be far better off signing fellow Ligue 1 striker Moussa Dembele this summer.

Dembele is 10 years younger than the Uruguayan and is exactly the kind of prolific striker United should be targeting.
