‘Special player’: Bryan Robson explains why Bruno Fernandes can be new Paul Scholes

Manchester United great Bryan Robson thinks new signing Bruno Fernandes can have a similar impact to Paul Scholes at Old Trafford.

The Portugal midfielder has made a tremendous impact since signing from Sporting Lisbon in January, winning both the club’s February and March player of the month award.

Many United fans had implored the club to sign the playmaker the summer before his eventual move. But even some of his most long-term admirers may not have expected him to settle in quite so quickly.

Fernandes has exhibited everything that has been missing in attacking midfield under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United had long been too slow or wasteful in attack, but Fernandes adds purpose and speed in transition through his movement and quality on the ball.

He has scored three goals and has four assists in nine appearances in all competitions and has already proven he is a player Solskjaer can build his squad around.

It’s very easy to get carried away with the start Fernandes has made and we are yet to see him perform on a consistent basis.

But captain Marvel Robson is as excited as most fans and sees similarities in Fernandes’ game with arguably the most talented midfielder to play for the club in Scholes.
