Things have changed for Nemanja Matic. The Serb missed most of this season and it looked like he would be leaving Old Trafford this month.
Injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay have enabled Matic to get back into the team, and he’s played well under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this term, becoming a trusted force in what is a very light midfield.
Still, we can only imagine that opinions may be split over what to do with him going forward.

Man Utd are not in a position to sell midfielders at the moment. Last year we lost both Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera and replaced neither of them. Add to that Solskjaer’s midfield crisis and you can sort of understand the reason for keeping Matic.
It’s understandable that plenty of fans will want the club to move on and bring in new signings, but Matic has impressed Solskjaer and might even extend his stay:
Nemanja Matic out of contract this summer but #MUFC have option to extend deal by a year. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: “He’s playing the best football since I’ve come here. Nemanja is a top professional & we are keeping in touch with him & we are talking to him, yeah”

With Matic certain to stay until the end of the season at least, United should have scouts searching for the next best defensive midfielder to pursue ahead of the summer. Better planning will lead to better recruitment.
Time will tell if keeping Matic is a wise move from United…
