Manchester United have a number of highly rated youngsters in their ranks at present, but Tahith Chong’s future is up in the air and he could leave on a free transfer in the summer.
The promising teenager doesn’t look like he will be signing a new deal at Old Trafford where tensions have risen. The Daily Mail suggest a move is almost certain after disagreements between Chong and the club, as a result of how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has handled the player’s situation.
He joined Man Utd from Feyenoord in 2016 and impressed during his time in the academy.
Now an international for the Netherlands U21s, Chong continued to impress United coaches and was subsequently called up to the first team for the pre-season tour of America in 2018. Since then he’s made 11 competitive appearances for the club.
Chong has been linked with Serie A champions Juventus and is said to be demanding a long-term contract worth around £50,000 a week.
Erkan Alkan, Chong’s agent, said: “He (Solskjaer) has different views on Tahith than the leadership. A coach thinks about himself; I think about my player. He has come to a point where he feels that he not going any further. Then it’s time to look further.”
However, Don Balon in Spain claim that Barcelona are interested in Chong and call him the ‘new Arjen Robben’, which as a comparison is miles off. Manchester United bookies can book action at realbookies so it may be worth having a flutter on Chong’s next destination.
Chong has started four matches this season and failed to stand out in any of those games. He’s been unimpressive for the most part, and looks like a young player who should go out on loan for a season or two, but he seemingly expects to be handed first team football before he’s ready.
Not every starlet hits the ground running immediately like Mason Greenwood or Brandon Williams.
I can’t see him getting it at Juventus either — before people suggest this is another Paul Pogba situation, with Chong available to leave on a Bosman in the summer.
Solskjaer clearly doesn’t believe the winger is ready for top-level football in England, with Chong playing just 24 minutes of Premier League football this season, and there’s not a single fan who can disagree with him on that.
Paul Hirst from The Times also claims Chong has made his mind up to quit United and wants to move to Italy.
The report adds that both Inter Milan and Juventus are willing to meet Chong’s demands.
Solskjaer previous said that the decision over whether to stay or go was Chong’s to make.
“There are players we want to get signed [up to new contracts] and Tahith is a player we think is going to develop,” Solskjaer said. “We’ve ordered him a very good contract and the ball is in his court.”
