(Video) Maguire nearly produced iconic moment with dribble & shot from 30-yards v Newcastle

Harry Maguire came close to scoring a screamer on Boxing Day.

It’s not often you see a centre-back get so far forward that they feel they’re within a position to have a crack on goal, but Maguire did enough to make Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka work from 30-yards out.

The England international drifted past two Newcastle players to create enough space to have a shot.

And his effort on goal wasn’t bad either with the ball directed towards the top left-hand corner.

Although it didn’t change the outcome of the game, with the Red Devils winning 4-1, Maguire would have cherished a goal of this magnitude.

Name a centre-back who wouldn’t… We’ll wait.

Maguire spoke after the match about United’s needing to be more consistent and the importance of keeping clean sheets — something the Reds haven’t done since the 1-0 win over Leicester City at the beginning of the season.

“We want to get back to clean sheets; we’re working hard to get clean sheets,” Maguire told reporters after the match (via Goal.com).

“We’re not conceding many chances in many games, but it’s something that we’re going to work on. We’re going to improve.”

On consistency and a top-four finish in the league, Maguire added: “That’s the key. You’ve got to put performances together, put wins together.

“It’s really important that you go on runs in this league. We haven’t really found that consistency to put three, four, five wins together. It’s something that we need to work on.

“We’re a young group, we’re learning, [and] there are positives to take from today but now we’re focused on Saturday.”
