Sky Sports pundit believes Man Utd can catch Chelsea in race for a top-four finish

Paul Merson reckons Man Utd have what it takes to catch Chelsea in the race for a top-four finish this season in the Premier League.

The Red Devils are enjoying better results after beating Tottenham and champions Man City last week.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have endured a blip in form with Frank Lampard’s men having lost three of their last four games. After a promising start to the campaign (despite losing 4-0 against United), the player turned manager is experiencing his first difficult period in the top flight with a very young side at his disposal.

In order to clinch a spot in the top-four, one of these teams needs to show a higher level of consistency between now and the end of the season.

The festive period can be good time to reach top form and make ground on other teams competing for Champions League qualification.

Chelsea are currently fourth in the Premier League but United are just five behind the Blues.

Former Arsenal star Merson believes Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and United are all fighting for a top-four finish as things stand.

Merson wrote the following in his column for Sky Sports: “Can Manchester United catch Chelsea in fourth? 100 per cent! There’s a long way to go.

“Chelsea are a young side and are going to have their ups and downs.

“Spurs aren’t going to be far away either now Jose Mourinho has been appointed.

“You’ve got Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United, four big clubs, vying for what looks to be one spot ion the top four.”

Next up for United in the league is Everton — at home on Sunday — and they must take all three points to keep the momentum they have going. A winning run over the Christmas would be ideal.
