Ex-Man Utd defender set to return to Old Trafford for farewell fixture

Antonio Valencia will return to Old Trafford for a farewell friendly fixture next year.

The former United captain is now playing for Ecuadorian side LDU who have have confirmed they will be playing a game at the Theatre of Dreams next season.

LDU director Esteban Paz told Radio Huancavilca, as sourced by Sport Witness: “Soon we’ll have the possibility to play against United at Old Trafford, where Antonio Valencia will have his farewell match,”

“We hope it will be for the first quarter of next year.”

Valencia was a fantastic servant for United and it will be great to see him get an Old Trafford send off.

In a 10 year career at United, he won two Premier League titles and made an impressive 339 appearances.

Despite struggling in the final months of his United career, Valencia should be remembered as a player who was always willing to give it all for the shirt and did what was asked of him no matter what the circumstances were.

It was never going to be easy for the natural winger to adapt into a right-back role but he still put in some useful performances in the role.

Club director Esteban Paz’ first quarter of next year prediction for the friendly does seem ambitious however. Games of this ilk usually take place at the end of the season or in pre-season.
