Pereira: I can play on the right-wing like Man Utd great David Beckham

Manchester United midfielder has made confident claims that he can play on the right-wing like David Beckham.

Pereira was rewarded with a new contract at Old Trafford this summer, as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer showed his faith in the Brazilian.

The academy graduate has never managed to cement a regular place in United’s first team, despite having successful loan spells at La Liga sides Granada and Valencia.

Perhaps Pereira’s biggest struggle is that he is not seen as a specialist in any position, as he can play in a number of roles across the midfield.

“As a No.8 or a No.10. I can play on the right wing like Becks used to play, cut inside and get the early cross in. I have a lot to show,” Pereira told Andy Mitten for FourFourTwo.

It seems unlikely Solskjaer would choose to operate the 23-year-old in the right-wing role, despite the Reds lacking a specialist in that position. Pereira has proven he has a good crossing ability but does that have the pace needed to suit the Norwegian’s counter-attacking style.

However, with no midfielder signed yet this summer, this season could be a great chance for Pereira to show he is good enough for Manchester United in central midfield.

The Brazilian has shown glimpses of what he is capable of so far, most notably his excellent curled effort against Southampton at Old Trafford. But he must start to perform consistently and get a proper run in the team to show fans what he is really made of this season.
