Former Head of Sports Science and Strength and Conditioning at Crystal Palace Scott Guyett is thrilled at the opportunity Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been given to play for Manchester United.
Wan-Bissaka was confirmed as the club’s second signing of the summer for £50m (BBC), following the transfer of Daniel James from Swansea.
The England u21 international is regarded as one of the most talented young full-backs across Europe, but Guyett did initially expect Wan-Bissaka to potentially sign for the Reds.
“I didn’t work directly with Aaron until he came to train with the first team a couple of seasons ago and if you’d told me five years ago that this guy would move to Manchester United for £50m at the age of 21, I’d have laughed,” he told Goal.
Wan-Bissaka is often praised for his excellent defensive attributes, but former coach Guyett was quick to praise the physical side of the youngster’s game.
“He’s an incredible athlete – that was apparent as soon as he came to train with the first team – and was the only player I’d seen who could consistently beat Wilfried Zaha in a one-on-one.
“He’s quick, I wouldn’t say lightning, but is also very powerful, agile and has exceptional timing,” he added.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a fantastic player on his hands in a position that desperately needed strengthening. The 21-year-old was part of the touring party to fly out to Australia today and we hope to see the youngster playing in a red shirt for the first time during matches against Perth Glory and Leeds United.
