Sporting president Frederico Varandas looks resigned to losing his star midfielder this summer, and wants his future resolved before the club’s trip to Switzerland this weekend.

Sky Sports’ reported that Sporting are looking for around £50m for Fernandes, who has been identified by boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a midfield target.

United’s midfield needs strengthening this summer and Fernandes could be an ideal addition. The Reds have also been linked with young Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff.

It looks as though Sporting are as keen as United to resolve the midfielder’s future, so hopefully significant advancements can be made in the coming days before the Reds fly out on their pre-season tour to Australia.

Solskjaer’s side face Perth Glory and Leeds United during their trip down under.
