Sergio Romero is reportedly set to become Manchester United’s number one goalkeeper if David de Gea leaves Old Trafford this summer.
De Gea has just one year left on his current deal and he continues to be linked with a move away from the Reds.

As a result, United have been linked with alternative goalkeepers such as Barcelona’s Jasper Cillessen and Ajax’s Andre Onana. But the former is about to join Benfica, as per The Sun, and Onana we don’t know much about, apart from some quality saves in the Champions League this season with Ajax reaching the semi-finals.
Even Sir Alex Ferguson struggled to replace his best goalkeepers and this a challenge Ole Gunnar Solskjaer probably wants to avoid right now. He already has a lot on his plate and knows the start of next season will come with plenty of pressure on his shoulders, as manager of the 20-times champions of England.
According to the Daily Mail, Solskjaer will promote Romero rather than signing another goalie if De Gea moves on.
Romero joined United on a Bosman following his departure from Sampdoria.
He is among the best back-up goalkeepers in England and rarely lets United down when between the posts, which means he’s great to have around the club while De Gea starts most games. You don’t hear him complain about the situation.
It will be interesting to see what happens with De Gea next season as it seems he holds the key to Romero being United’s number one.
