Rio Ferdinand knows what it means to play for Manchester United against Liverpool, a fixture that sees the greatest rivals of English football go head-to-head.
In preparation for Sunday’s big clash at Old Trafford, the former England international sent a clear message to all players involved later on, showing a great goal he scored against the Scousers during his time at the club.

He shared the message on Instagram with the following caption: “This game to a @manchesterunited player, staff memeber, a fan etc means so much. A rivalry between 2 clubs that goes back many years… a team talk isn’t even needed… as a player you are made fully aware that this game has everything riding on it no matter how well either team is doing at the time. The atmosphere created at the stadium by both teams is enough to give you chills. As a player you must rub ya hands together and be saying – this is a bit of me, let’s go & bag the 3 points by any means.”
Ferdinand is one of the best defenders to have played for United, and a message of this sort should stand out to all of the current players, especially those witnessing the fixture for the first time.
Liverpool are still in the title race, so while United will be trying to stop them moving into 1st, we also must make sure we keep momentum for a top four finish with a win over Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will demanding a big performance from his players but there probably won’t be much of a pre-match team talk. Sir Alex Ferguson wasn’t one of that prior to this fixture because the players already knew what the match meant.
