Manchester United are preparing to appoint a director of football as well as a new manager.
Prospective managers will have no other choice but to work with a director of football when talking the United job.
While many big clubs a director of football in place, United have never operated with such a model though it has been suggested for some time.

There was confirmation of Jose Mourinho’s sacking this morning as he left Carrington, and it looks like United are ready to introduce a new model to try improve the manager’s working environment.
James Robson of the Evening Standard claims on Twitter that the next manager of Manchester United “will be told they are expected to work with a DOF during interview process.”
So, United are making it clear in the early stages of talks that a new model will be introduced with the new manager.
However, there does not appear to be anyone in particular leading the race to become the club’s DOF.
