Ferdinand and Scholes quizzed on Mourinho’s future and possibility of Zidane becoming manager

Jose Mourinho will face even more pressure if Manchester United fail to beat Arsenal at Old Trafford tonight.

Going on form, the Reds shouldn’t stand a chance but the visit of Arsenal should rile each of the players up, knowing a loss will see a top four finish even more difficult to achieve.

Ex-United stars, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes, never sit on the fence when it comes to Mourinho. Anyone who watches BT Sport’s coverage of United games is likely to be of the view neither want the Portuguese tactician in charge of the Old Trafford club.

Both Ferdinand and Scholes were asked if Mourinho needs to go if United don’t win tonight, and the legendary centre-back was first to answer, as quoted by Manchester Evening News: “I don’t know. It’s a difficult question that, is there a ready-made replacement out there that they can go and get immediately?

“You can’t just make a knee jerk decision and then decide who to get in after. There needs to be that process lined up and ready.”

That response led to Scholes being asked about former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane.

“Is Zidane the right man though? He went in to Real Madrid who had a group of ready-made winners already. This is a totally different job; he would have to rebuild confidence with a squad that isn’t quite performing. He went to Real Madrid with so many great players, it was still difficult but, this would be a whole rebuilding job.”

Scholes hits the nail on the head with his answer. There’s not enough evidence from Zidane’s managerial career that he is cut out for such a job.

A visionary is needed and someone who will get the best out of players – even those who require an arm around the shoulder. Not a pushover and preferably a manager with a track record of winning things.
