Paul Merson senses it’s time Man Utd removed the shackles in pre-Everton prediction

Paul Merson is predicting that the shackles will come off this weekend for Manchester United.

That doesn’t bode well for Marco Silva’s Everton, sat in eight in the Premier League, two places ahead of the Reds.

For his weekly predictions segment on Sky Sports, Merson correctly states “United are all over the place at the moment” as Jose Mourinho’s side continues to leak goals at the back and struggle just as much going forward.

Much of the attention is currently on Romelu Lukaku after going eight games without a goal. The Belgian’s form has certainly dipped, but Mourinho thinks he will return to scoring again as soon as his confidence rebuilds.

The Sky Sports pundit and former Gunner believes “Everton will cause them [United] problems” yet he feels we’ll edge it by predicting a 2-1 win in our favour.

Merson also gets a dig in at the end of his Man Utd v Everton prediction: “…if they somehow make the top four then they would have pulled up trees this season.”

While he’s right, it doesn’t sit right with us that three years into Mourinho’s reign that is considered reality. United have spent a fortune since sacking Louis van Gaal and we’re 10th in the Premier League, already out of the title race since mid-September and knocked out of the League Cup by Derby County.

Overall the team is drastically underperforming and sets up defensively against lesser opponents despite being unable to defend.

For crying out loud, why can’t Mourinho mix it up and play to his player’s strengths until he gets the players required to play his own brand of football?
