Man Utd set for contract talks with fans’ favourite; club believes in Martial even if Mourinho doesn’t

Reports have emerged from French publication RMC Sport to suggest Manchester United are hoping to sit down with Anthony Martial in the coming weeks to discuss fresh terms in an attempt to keep the Frenchman at the club for the long-term.

Martial, a fans’ favourite, had allegedly become frustrated with playing second fiddle to Alexis Sanchez following the Chilean’s January arrival.

The France international, who has been out of the national side as a result of minimal game time with United, pleaded to his agent to leave Old Trafford during the summer, as per The Guardian.

Jose Mourinho’s treatment of Martial also came under scrutiny with the United manager reportedly requesting that United sell the attacker to the highest bidder this past summer, as claimed by the Daily Mail. That request was seemingly ignored by the club’s vice executive-chairman Ed Woodward.

That led to the Premier League giants being linked with Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic after a convincing World Cup campaign, as reported by the Manchester Evening News while the Croatian played a key role in leading his country to the final, losing to France.

Martial broke onto the stage with a stunning goal against Liverpool in 2015 following his mega-money transfer from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco. His development has stalled since then and even if he does get more game time at United, it will take a lot to edge Paris Saint-Germain starlet Kylian Mbappe out of the French line-up.

Mbappe, also formerly of Monaco, has become an example to all young players with his progress. He is now recognised as one of the best young players in world football and we should be saying the same about Martial.

United still believe Martial can achieve such status.

Otherwise, the club wouldn’t be so adamant about offering him a new contract at the risk of unsettling Mourinho.
