Double Swoop: Man Utd consider mega-money raid on Serie A giants

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing up a double raid on Inter Milan for striker Mauro Icardi and centre-back Milan Skriniar to bolster Jose Mourinho’s options at both ends of the pitch.

While it’s important United prioritise a defender in the January transfer window or settle with what they have until next summer, signing a striker of Icardi’s class is going to cost a lot and with Romelu Lukaku already leading the line, we’re unsure that part of this report makes any sense.

It’s been a challenging start to the campaign for the Reds, as back-to-back defeats to Brighton and Tottenham have seen them drop off the early pace set by their rivals in the Premier League: Liverpool, Chelsea and, of course, champions Manchester City.

Our win over Burnley last time out will have boosted confidence and most players should return from the international break with a fresh outlook, ready to set the record straight and get United back on track.

According to The Sun, via the paper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Mourinho could be setting his sights on a double swoop for Inter duo Icardi and Skriniar.

Icardi, 25, has established himself as one of the most prolific forwards in Europe. He joined Inter in 2013 and has gone on to score 107 goals in 183 games while taking his career goal tally to 118 in 216 games.

The report notes that both Icardi and Skriniar will be offered new contracts at Inter, so it will be intriguing to see if they commit their future to the Serie A giants or seek a new challenge in Manchester.

As for Skriniar, a 23-year-old defender with an extremely aggressive approach to the game, he made 40 appearances across all competitions last season, helping Inter successfully pursue Champions League qualification.
