‘Sack Mourinho and bring in Giggs’ – Wales 4-1 win over Ireland springs knee-jerk reactions

This one requires some perspective.

Ryan Giggs caught the eye last night as his Wales side beat the Republic of Ireland 4-1 in his first home match in charge.

The Manchester United legend remains highly thought of at Old Trafford, having spent his entire career at Old Trafford as a player. A long and successful one at that.

He even served as caretaker manager for the end of the 2013/14 season after David Moyes had been sacked, before then working as an assistant to Louis van Gaal for the following two years.

It goes without saying that Giggs one day dreams of managing United and back before Jose Mourinho got the job, he wasn’t far behind the Portuguese tactician in the popularity charts amongst fans. There is a feeling he would play attacking football with wingers, just how United fans like, but the timing must be right.

With United struggling under Mourinho right now, winning two of their opening four fixtures this season, it’s little surprise to see some fans taking to Twitter in knee-jerk fashion to call for executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to take a look at what Giggs is doing in his first big job in management.

The game itself was a mismatch with Wales fully in control from the outset en route to a damning scoreline for Martin O’Neill’s men. Wales were confident and organised, youthful and technically assured. All of the qualities that Ireland lacked.

Troubled preparation for O’Neill makes this a difficult time for the former Celtic manager and his set up, including assistant manager and United legend Roy Keane.

Wales beat a very poor Ireland side. Make no mistake about it, but there were promising signs from Giggs’ point of view and there will be people at the club watching what he achieves over the coming years with this group of players.

Here is how fans reacted on Twitter.
